Where Mindfulness Meets Sushi Craft

Mindful Maki began with a simple idea - to make the calm, mindful spirit of sushi-making accessible to everyone.

Our Origin Story

It started when James, a psychologist who loves to cook, trained in sushi making and experienced how naturally the process invites presence - the rhythm of rinsing rice, the weight of the knife, the respect for each ingredient.

What began as a small sushi-making kit soon evolved.

People weren’t just connecting with the food - they were connecting with the experience.

The slow pace. The gentle prompts. The moments of presence that came with each step.

That insight shaped the next chapter: the Mindful Cooking Deck - a guided card deck that helps you create your own mindful cooking ritual at home. It blends authentic sushi craft with mindfulness, sensory cues, and connection.

Rooted in principles from Mindfulness-Based Eating Awareness Training (MB-EAT), every card encourages slowing down, tuning in, and appreciating the people you’re with.

Whether you’re cooking solo or with someone you love, Mindful Maki offers more than a recipe - it’s a way to savour the moment and move through food with intention.

Meet James

Hi, I’m James - a psychologist and home cook who grew up learning to cook beside my mum.

Some of my earliest memories are in the kitchen with her - watching, helping, and absorbing the small lessons she passed on through food: patience, care, and taking the time to enjoy what you create. Those slow, simple moments shaped how I learned to connect with the people around me.

As life got busier, I found that same calm again through sushi-making. The rhythm of washing rice, the focus of slicing fish, the quiet intention behind each step - it brought me back to those childhood moments of presence and ease.

Mindful Maki grew from that mix of memory, craft, and mindfulness.

A way to share that feeling with others - to help people slow down, cook with intention, and reconnect with themselves and the ones they love.

One card, one step, one moment at a time.
