Chirashi Sushi Ritual - A ritual inspired by celebration and togetherness

Chirashi sushi, meaning “scattered sushi,” is a traditional Japanese dish of seasoned rice topped with fish, vegetables, and egg, often prepared for celebrations and shared occasions. It is especially connected to Hinamatsuri, or Girls’ Day, a Japanese holiday celebrating the wellbeing, growth, and happiness of daughters and loved ones. Families gather around the table to share colourful foods, creating a moment to reflect, reconnect, and celebrate one another’s lives.

Inspired by this tradition of togetherness, the prompts throughout this ritual are designed to bring that same spirit into our time together. Some invite you to reflect on the people and moments that have shaped you. Others encourage celebration, gratitude, curiosity, and the sharing of hopes for the future. Like Chirashi itself, each conversation becomes part of the meal, layered together into something personal, meaningful, and shared.

Here, Chirashi becomes more than a recipe. It becomes a ritual of slowing down, cooking side by side, and creating space to come together.

Before cooking together

We encourage you to try these roles to help with actually moving together.

  1. Person 1 Guides the pace and reads the steps

  2. Person 2 Does the hands-on cooking

Feel free to swap these roles whenever it feels natural

How did this feel compared to how you usually eat?

If this felt different, you’re not alone.

We started Mindful Maki because we believed cooking could be more than just making dinner. It could be a way to slow down, reconnect, and create moments that actually stay with you.

We’re now turning these experiences into Cooking Together Cards — a physical ‘cooking together’ deck designed to guide you through shared cooking, meaningful conversation, and meals that feel more meaningful.
