What is Chirashi Sushi?
Chirashi Sushi (ちらし寿司), meaning “scattered sushi,” is a traditional Japanese dish of seasoned rice topped with a variety of ingredients, often prepared for celebrations and shared at the table. Rooted in home-style cooking, it reflects generosity, balance, and the beauty of bringing different elements together.
In the Mindful Maki ritual, Chirashi becomes a way to slow down, cook side by side, and reconnect. As you move through each step, from sharing memorable food moments, to exploring what’s quietly simmering beneath the surface, to noticing the small ways you show care, the experience gently opens space for meaningful conversation.
Through preparing, slicing, and assembling the bowl together, you begin to learn how you work together, reflecting not just on the meal, but on your relationship. By the time the Chirashi comes together, so does the moment, leaving you with a shared sense of connection, and a chance to reflect on what you carry forward.
